The waters around Halmahera are renowned for their clear visibility, thriving reef systems, and diverse marine species. Divers can explore steep walls, coral-covered pinnacles, and drift dives teeming with schooling fish, reef sharks, napoleon wrasse, and colorful macro critters. Rare sightings of wobbegong sharks, manta rays, and even pygmy seahorses make this a hotspot for underwater photographers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Currents can be strong, so dives are recommended for intermediate and experienced divers.
Halmahera has a tropical climate with two main seasons. The dry season, from May to October, offers calm seas, excellent visibility (20–40 meters), and cooler water temperatures ranging from 26–29°C (79–84°F), ideal for long drift dives and pelagic encounters. The wet season, from November to April, brings warmer waters (28–30°C / 82–86°F) and occasional rain, but marine life remains abundant and diving continues year-round.
Above water, Halmahera is a lush island with volcanic peaks, dense jungle, and unique cultural villages. Its remote location means liveaboards are the best way to explore multiple dive sites in comfort and safety, while also enjoying the beauty of the surrounding islands.
Liveaboard Diving Regions :
Bacan and Obi Islands
Located southwest of Halmahera, these islands feature steep walls, pinnacles, and coral gardens alive with reef fish, napoleon wrasse, and schooling jacks. Currents are moderate to strong, offering thrilling drift dives. Wobbegong sharks and reef sharks are common, while manta rays are occasionally seen cleaning at the pinnacles. Diving is best from May to October when seas are calm and visibility is at its peak.
North Halmahera – Kao and Jailolo
The northern region is known for dramatic drop-offs, volcanic reefs, and nutrient-rich currents that attract pelagic species. Divers may encounter bumphead parrotfish, giant trevallies, reef sharks, and large schools of fusiliers. Strong currents make this region ideal for advanced divers seeking adrenaline-filled dives. Best diving season is June to October, although diving is possible year-round.
Makian and Ternate Macro Sites
These northern Halmahera outliers are known for black sand dives rich in critters — frogfish, nudibranchs, ghost pipefish and even walking sharks — while Ternate offers a few historic wreck dives near the mosque.
Goraici Islands
A cluster of remote islands with healthy coral gardens, slopes and pinnacles teeming with schooling fish, reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse and — with luck — manta rays. These rarely crowded sites offer classic Indo wall diving and pristine visuals.
Patinti Strait (Bacan/Halmahera)
This channel between Halmahera and Bacan Island is one of the region’s most dynamic liveaboard zones, where strong currents attract large schools of anthias, reef sharks, barracuda and jacks. Expect exhilarating drift dives and nutrient‑rich coral growth.
South Halmahera
Featuring pinnacles, walls and black sand slopes reminiscent of Lembeh muck diving, South Halmahera’s reefs support abundant schooling fish and reef sharks. Night dives here reveal fantastic macro life.
Pulau Tifore & Pisang Island
Remote islands often visited on transition liveaboards between North Sulawesi and Halmahera. Expect big schools of barracuda and trevallies, vibrant coral formations and dramatic drop‑offs.
