Truk Lagoon, located in the heart of Micronesia, is one of the world’s most famous wreck diving destinations. This massive sheltered lagoon was the main Japanese naval base during World War II and today hosts over 60 sunken ships, dozens of aircraft, and countless artifacts, perfectly preserved in calm tropical waters. For technical divers and wreck enthusiasts, Truk Lagoon offers some of the most compelling underwater history combined with rich marine life.

Diving in Truk Lagoon is ideal for certified technical divers. Depths range from 18 meters to over 60 meters, and many wrecks are penetrable with proper training and equipment. Divers exploring the Japanese cargo ships, oil tankers, and battleships can encounter intact decks, aircraft fuselages, and even personal effects, creating an unparalleled living museum underwater. Strong currents are uncommon within the lagoon, but deeper penetration and decompression dives require advanced planning and experience. Nitrox and trimix are highly recommended for repetitive deep dives.

Water visibility in Truk Lagoon ranges from 20–35 meters in the dry season (November to May), while water temperatures stay comfortable between 27–30°C (81–86°F). The lagoon’s shallow reefs and wrecks also attract an abundance of tropical fish, eagle rays, Napoleon wrasse, and reef sharks, offering rewarding encounters even for tech divers focused on wreck penetration.

Beyond its famous wrecks, Truk Lagoon is home to colorful coral gardens, soft corals, reef fish, turtles, rays, and occasional shark encounters. Divers can explore a variety of wreck types—from cargo and passenger ships to fighter planes and submarines—each offering a unique glimpse into history and underwater life. Night dives reveal an entirely different ecosystem, with critters like octopus, frogfish, and nudibranchs.

Truk Lagoon is best explored by liveaboard, which allows divers to access the most remote and untouched wrecks, often far from shore. Liveaboards in Truk cater to small groups of advanced divers, providing nitrox, trimix fills, dive tenders, and onboard workshops on wreck history, safety, and penetration techniques. This setup ensures divers can maximize their bottom time, safely conduct multiple daily dives, and explore the lagoon’s full depth and variety.

Liveaboard Diving Regions :

North Lagoon Wrecks
This area features some of the largest Japanese vessels, including cargo ships and tankers. Depths range from 30–60 meters, ideal for tech divers with trimix or nitrox. Many wrecks are penetrable, with intact holds and cargo still inside. Expect to encounter reef sharks, eagle rays, schools of snapper, and curious Napoleon wrasse. Best dived during November–May for optimal visibility.

Central Lagoon Wrecks
Home to the famous Fuji Maru, San Francisco Maru, and other iconic wrecks, this area is perfect for repetitive dives and deeper penetration. Tech divers can explore engine rooms, cargo holds, and artillery, while observing abundant macro life. Currents are generally minimal, making long dives safer and more enjoyable.

Southern Lagoon Wrecks and Reefs
Deeper and less visited, the southern lagoon hosts a mix of ships and airplanes. Dives here often require advanced planning and full technical setup, rewarding divers with pristine wrecks, vibrant reef life, and minimal crowds. Perfect for liveaboard itineraries looking to access untouched sites.
