Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago, located in the southern Andaman Sea, is one of Asia’s most pristine and unexplored diving destinations. With over 800 mostly uninhabited islands, crystal-clear waters, and diverse coral reefs, this area offers a sense of adventure and isolation rarely found in popular dive spots. The archipelago is home to dramatic underwater landscapes, including walls, pinnacles, swim-throughs, and hidden caves, teeming with marine life.

Diving in Myanmar ranges from calm reef explorations to thrilling drift dives along steep walls. The coral reefs are vibrant and healthy, hosting schools of snappers, fusiliers, and butterflyfish, while larger species such as reef sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles patrol the waters. Macro enthusiasts will enjoy the smaller inhabitants, including seahorses, nudibranchs, and colorful reef critters. Currents vary depending on location, making some sites ideal for intermediate and advanced divers.

The best time to dive in the Mergui Archipelago is October to May, with calm seas and excellent visibility. Water temperatures range from 27–30°C (80–86°F), creating comfortable diving conditions. December to April is particularly favorable for encountering large pelagics, while October–November offers quieter conditions with fewer liveaboards and excellent reef diving.

Above water, the Mergui Archipelago’s lush jungles and secluded beaches offer a peaceful contrast to life below the surface. Most divers access the area via liveaboards departing from the nearby Thai gateways like Ranong and Phuket, combining adventure with cultural exploration en route.
