Bikini Atoll, located in the remote Marshall Islands in the central Pacific Ocean, is one of the most historically significant wreck diving destinations in the world. This isolated atoll is home to an extraordinary concentration of deep-water shipwrecks, sunk during post–World War II nuclear testing. Today, these vessels rest silently beneath crystal-clear waters, forming a unique underwater museum that attracts experienced technical divers from around the globe.
Diving in Bikini Atoll is entirely focused on wreck exploration. The wrecks are massive, well preserved, and lie at depths ranging from approximately 30 to over 60 meters. Battleships, aircraft carriers, cruisers, submarines, and support vessels are scattered across the lagoon, many still recognizable with gun turrets, aircraft, bridges, and superstructures intact. Visibility is often excellent, and currents inside the lagoon are generally mild, allowing long, methodical dives dedicated to historical and technical exploration.
Bikini Atoll is not a recreational diving destination. Due to depth, decompression obligations, and penetration possibilities, this destination is reserved exclusively for highly trained and experienced technical divers. Divers must be prepared for extended bottom times, staged decompression, and self-reliant diving in one of the most remote regions on Earth.
Water temperatures typically range between 26–29°C (79–84°F) year-round, with calm surface conditions during the main operating season. Despite the tropical climate, dives are long and deep, making appropriate exposure protection essential.
Technical Diving Requirements :
Diving Bikini Atoll requires strict minimum and mandatory certifications, with no exceptions:
Minimum certification: PADI Tec 50 or equivalent technical certification.
Experience: At least 100 logged dives, including documented wreck diving experience.
Advanced technical skills: Proven experience with deep decompression dives and multi-gas planning.
For Closed Circuit Rebreather (CCR) divers, it is important to note that:
Liveaboards generally provide trimix only for CCR diving.
Divers using CCR must hold a normoxic trimix certification.
CCR divers are expected to be fully proficient in bailout planning and self-sufficiency.
Liveaboard Diving Regions
Bikini Lagoon
The Bikini Lagoon contains the full collection of legendary wrecks, all accessible only by liveaboard. The wrecks are spread across the lagoon floor, offering a variety of depths and profiles suitable for multiple technical dive plans. Highlights include massive battleships, aircraft carriers, cruisers, and submarines, many of which allow limited penetration for suitably trained divers. Marine life has reclaimed the wrecks over decades, with coral growth, schooling fish, reef sharks, and pelagic visitors adding life to the historic structures.
Due to isolation, weather dependency, and strict technical requirements, Bikini Atoll liveaboard trips operate on limited schedules and are suitable only for divers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime, expedition-style wreck diving experience.
