Spawning Speacial - New Moon - 11D/10N

and

Spawning Speacial - Full Moon - 8D/7N

Our Special Spawning itinerary on SY Palau Siren offers guests something truly exceptional. Divers joining these cruises will have a chance to witness one of the most spectacular natural events on earth; the spawning aggregations of the bumphead parrotfish (bolbomeotpon muricatum) that occur at new moon and the red snapper (lutjanus bohar) at full moon lunar cycles.

At full moon, thousands of bumphead parrotfish gather together in one area at one particular time each month. Building up to a spectacular showdown, males begin their display of dominance, attempting to attract as many mating partners as possible. As females continue to gather, the school spills out into the blue where the tension erupts into a climatic mating dance. At full moon, red snappers aggregate to show their own similar spawning spectacle full of energy and excitement. Not surprisingly, these events also attract the biggest predators in Palau such as bull sharks, oceanic blacktip sharks, and hammerheads. Watch how they hunt actively within the large school of spawning fish. It is something only a select few people ever get to witness and you can now be one of them.

In addition to these special spawning dives, you will have the opportunity to experience 'Blackwater' diving in Palau. Imagine rolling off the boat in the pitch black of night, sometimes many miles away from the shallow water of the reefs, to watch one of the largest migrations on earth as all manner of weird and wonderful creatures from the depths head closer to the surface to feed. From post larval fish to Cephalopods, many smaller than your finger nail, these amazing dives present some of weirdest creatures you are ever likely to see without a submarine.

During the period of the cruise when the spawning occurs, your Cruise Director will give a number of presentations about these unique dives. These informative talks will cover everything from the ecology of these events to the best way to photograph them. For the diving, the group will be split into two teams of eight divers to witness these spectacular events, thereby maximising the experience and ensuring that we only observe, not interfere with, this spectacular behaviour.

Palau can dive any time throughout the year, the rains are heavier from July to early October which reduces the visibility to an average of 15m and can cause weather conditions that may interfere with diving. Manta rays mating is from December to March (which is also considered as the "high season"). The grey reef shark mating is usually happen between February to March. Turtles breeding is from April to July.

About temperatures

Sea : between 28°C - 29°C year round without much variation

Wetsuit Recommendation
We recommend a dive Skin or 3 mm.

Diver requirement

Reef-toxic sunscreens are those which containoxybenzone, octylmethoxycinnamate, octocrylene, 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor, triclosan, methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, butyl paraben, benzyl paraben, phenoxythanol, or other chemical ingredients that are considered harmful to the marine environment.

Me and my gf went to Palau two months ago. And Palau Siren was very beautiful! My gf was not a diver, so she enjoyed a lot of time while onboard and was happy of the comfortable saloon. The windows in the cabin was a bit small was the only bad point we could found about this boat. And diving/snorkling in Palau was really very good!, great visibility and colourful reef, great amount of fish lifes.. I can't say how happy we were for the Jellyfish Lake, top of our holidays!
