Fish Aggregation & Spawning Dives

These amazing early morning dives with the Ocean Hunter dive crew are designed to deliver the most spectacular diving Palau has to offer. Based on the monthly lunar cycles, Ocean Hunter offers a once-in-a-lifetime diving experience. During Full and New Moon, different species of fish gather in huge aggregations to spawn. Numbers can vary from hundreds to thousands depending on the species. These mind-blowing spawning events usually attract Palau's biggest predators as well. This is a MUST DO dive - as the best dive days days are 2-3 days before full and new moon.

Moorish Idol Spawning Dives

Moorish Idols are known to aggregate and spawn through the months of December to late January. These groups which can consist of several hundred can be found rushing through Palau's outer reefs and slopes. The group without warning will rush towards the surface and away from the reef to release their eggs. During this time sharks and other predators will swarm to feed on the Moorish Idols lacking the protection of the reef.

Humphead Parrotfish Spawning Dives

Humphead Parrotfish can be identified by their bulbous bump on their forehead. They are the largest member in the parrotfish family and can grow over one meter in length. Just before the new moon cycle, schools of thousands of these fishes will migrate for a short spawning interval. The aggregation occurs for about 30 mins, then they propel themselves towards the surface in an explosive demostration. The surrounding water becomes milky littering with millions of tiny eggs that will be swept out to sea.

Twin Spot Red Snapper Spawning Dives

Just before the full moon lunar cycle the Twin Spot Red Snappers aggregate in the early mornings leading to the full moon. Thousands of snappers will migrate from surrounding areas and aggregate over the reef. When the tide begins to shift they rush up towards the surface releasing sperm and eggs in an explosive display. On many occasions large pelagic predators such as bullsharks, silvertips, and oceanic blacktips have be seen feasting and attacking the schools of snappers.

Sailfin Snapper Spawning Dives

Sailfin Snapper are generally known to be deepwater dwellers but a few times a year these fish aggregate and spawn in shallower depths. During the months of March/April/June the massive aggregation and spawning happens in Peleliu where tens of thousands create a visual phenomenon. Please note that this dive depends on moon phase and tides which is why it needs to be planned in advance.

Blue Light aka Fluo Diving

Blue Light Diving, also known as Fluo Diving is a little bit like psychedelic disco. It's a night dive like no other, discovering a hidden world within the already elusive world of the reef at night. The Ocean Hunter dive crew is using special torches and filters to reveal the fluorescence of corals and other critters on the reef at night. We offer the use of four lights with 15,000 lumen each, which combined allow us to illuminate a good part of the nightly reef leaving you your hands free to take stunning photos of the fluorescent reef.

Black Water Diving

The concept behind black-water diving is simple. It’s a night dive during which we use our strong lights in deep open ocean. We simply hang our divers out under the boat to see, what attracted by the bright light, floats by. Marine life that divers see on black-water dives rarely tops an inch or two in size.

Black Water dives are all about discovering the rarely seen world of planktonic creatures, many of them fish or other animals in their larval, or juvenile, phase of life, that ride ocean currents. Please note that we offer Black Water Dives only during trips marked as “Black Water & Fluo” Trips.

I would recommend this boat. The diving, as expected, was great. We went to all the signature dive sites: Blue Corner, Ulong Channel, two wrecks, etc and had the dive sites pretty much for ourselves. The crew was exceptionally good in roles. They ran the dive deck well and were very helpful when I had a problem with my equipment. The food was great and abundant. The accomodations are same as advertised, i enjoyed my stay and met some new friends. So I would do this one again. I booked through Dive and Cruise and Johann did a good job too. I am going to book my next trip through them. All good!
